Right in the socket - Shalamar

'Right in the socket' was the third and last single taken from Shalamar's 1979 album 'Big fun'. While the album was Shalamar's third album, it was the first to feature the band's 'classic' line-up of Jeffrey Daniel, Howard Hewett and Jody Watley. Hewett had replaced Gerald Brown early on in 1979 after conflicts over lack of payment from Dick Griffey and Solar Records.

This single was only a minor hit in the UK, peaking at number 44 in the singles chart. It isn't entirely inconceivable to interpret the lyrics in a sexual manner, but that's all up to the listener of course.

I can make you feel good - Shalamar

When I bought this 12" single there was no way to tell whether it contained an extended version of the lead track, so I just bought it. I think this version is slightly longer, but certainly not a remix of the track, which is a pity, but so be it.

Featuring three tracks, this disc was apparently sold for the price of a 7" single in the UK - or so the sticker says. Value for money then, because if anything, Shalamar were known for funky music and this is very funky music.

I can make you feel good - Shalamar

'I can make you feel good' was the biggest hit for Shalamar in the Netherlands, where it reached number 8 in the Dutch Top 40. It also did well in the UK, where the single peaked at number 7.

The single was taken from Shalamar's 1982 album 'Friends'. In the UK, that album is apparently regarded as one of the defining albums of that year.

Dead giveaway - Shalamar

Personally, I only know 'The second time around' and, more recently, 'Friends', but taking a quick look at the Guinnes book of hit singles (UK) reveals that Shalamar has actually released more than a dozen hit singles during their career.

While I was shopping in the Soul and dance department of the Record Exchange in London, I found three different Shalamar singles I didn't know. I decided to buy one of them, because the sleeve was quite beautiful and because I was rather curious. 'Dead giveaway' is a decent single, which also turns out to be one of the three UK top 10 hits, peaking at number 8 in June 1983.

Friends - Shalamar

Jody Watley was one of the members of Shalamar, and she would go on to have solo success. One of her solo singles was called 'Friends', just like this single by Shalamar. As you might expect, they are two different songs.

Shalamar released 'Friends' in November 1982, and it peaked in at number 12 in the UK singles chart. Like much of their material, it's a very groovy, danceable song.

The second time around - Shalamar

Producer and booking agent Dick Griffey put together Shalamar after the first single 'Uptown festival' (1977), performed by session singers, was a hit in America. Vocalists Jody Watley, Jeffrey Daniel and Howard Hewett were brought together in 1978. Their first international hit in this line-up was 'Take that to the bank'. They followed this up in 1979 with 'The second time around', which peaked at number 45 in the UK singles chart and number 28 in the Dutch Top 40.

A young Jody Watley was part of Shalamar. In 1984 she left the group to pursue a successful solo career.
