Downtown - Lloyd Cole

It is very possible that Lloyd Cole is one of Britain's best songwriters, but he is also largely ignored. His first four solo albums made the album top 40 in the UK, but after that (from 2000 onwards) they didn't make a dent anymore, except in Sweden where two of his albums made the top 20.

'Downtown' comes from his first solo outing, and was released as its third single. It didn't chart, despite its catchy hook. I bought that solo album some time ago and when I saw this single I decided to pick it up. I think Lloyd Cole needs more recognition.

My collection: 7" single no. 6168
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, September 21, 2019

Tracks: 'Downtown' / 'A long way down (live)'

Don't look back - Lloyd Cole

'Don't look back' was the second single taken from Lloyd Cole's first solo album, 'Lloyd Cole' (1990). It was released in a limited edition box set featuring the single (of course) and three prints. One wonder why they weren't just stuck into the sleeve of the single, but anyway...

Released in April 1990, the single didn't make the UK top 40, stalling at number 59 instead. I only knew 'No blue skies', Cole's previous single when I saw this boxset, but I took the gamble. I'm glad I did, because this song is equally great.

My collection: 7" single no. 1301
Found: Record exchange, London, October 15, 1990
Cost: 2 pounds
Tracks: 'Don't look back' / 'Blame Mary Jane'

No blue skies - Lloyd Cole

After Lloyd Cole & the Commotions disbanded in 1989, Lloyd Cole decided to relocate to New York and record solo work. The first result was the 1990 album 'Lloyd Cole' and the solo debut single 'No blue skies'. I was pleasantly surprised by this track, which sounded a lot more accessible than the last few singles by Lloyd Cole & the Commotions.

Still, it only managed a number 42 placing in the UK singles chart, and no chart placing in Europe at all.

My collection: 7" single no. 1173
Found: Melody Maker, Den Haag, February 17, 1990
Cost: 6 guilders
Tracks: 'No blue skies' / 'Shelly I do'
