Oh mama - Lili and Sussie

The Swedish duo Lili and Sussie released several singles, but none of them were more bubbly and danceable than their biggest hit, 'Candy love'. This single, released in 1987, was another attempt at having a hit.

Produced by Tim Norell, Ola Hakansson and Anders Hansson, the single wasn't a hit outside Sweden - but I don't know if it was a hit in Sweden.

My collection: 7" single no. 5146
Found: Chelsea Records, Antwerpen, June 9, 2011
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Oh mama' / 'One more night'

Candy love - Lili and Sussie

I don't know why I like this song so much, but I do. It's pretty standard eighties dance stuff, but it has that certain Scandinavian coolness about it. I described the 12" single of 'Candy love' last year on this blog, but obviously I've got the 7" single too.

This single hit number 28 in the Dutch Top 40 in February 1987. Nothing was ever heard from them again - at least, in the Netherlands.

My collection: 7" single no. 1644
Found: Record fair, Den Haag, May 3, 1992
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Candy love' / 'Candy love (instrumental)'

Tokyo - Lili and Sussie

I bought this single on the relative strength of 'Candy love', Lili & Sussie's only hit in the Netherlands. I didn't expect much from 'Tokyo'. It's a bit of throwaway pop, likeable but a bit fluffy. It didn't trouble the charts outside of Scandinavia, although I don't even know if it charted there either.

Part of my record collection is 'buying by association'. It's obvious that this time the lucky grab wasn't too lucky, although the single is nice enough.

My collection: 7" single no. 3333
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, March 24, 2001
Cost: 1 guilder
Tracks: 'Tokyo' / 'Do you remember'

Candy love - Lili and Sussie

Lili and Susie Päivärinta started recording music together in the early eighties. They scored numerous hits in their homeland Sweden. Their biggest hit in Sweden was the track 'Oh Mama'. 'Candy love' was the only single that achieved some success abroad. It reached the Dutch Top 40 on January 31, 1987 and reached no. 28.

They stopped their career in the early nineties. According to various sources, Lili & Sussie will reunite for the 2009 Swedish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, the Melodifestivalen.

My collection: 12" single no. 232
Found: Record fair, Rotterdam, 1994
Cost: 5 guilders
Tracks: 'Candy love (extended version)' / 'Candy love (instrumental)', 'Candy love (bonus beats)'
