Johnny Blue - Katri Helena

'Johnny Blue' was originally recorded by Lena Valaitis, and it was her entry for the 1981 Eurovision Song Contest, representing Germany. The song was written by the infamous duo Ralph Siegel and Bernd Meinunger, who together wrote many songs for the Contest.

Katri Helena's version was translated into Finnish by Kaisu Liuhala, who was a rather prolific song translator. Katri Helena, of course, represented Finland at Eurovision twice, in 1979 with 'Katson sineen taivan' and in 1993 with 'Tule luo'.

I will follow starlight - Katri Helena

Long before Katri Helena appeared on the Eurovision stage with the immortal 'Tule luo', she represented Finland in 1979 with the song 'Katson sineen taivaan'. She had actually participated in the Finnish national finals in 1969, 1972 and 1978, but this song made an impression and she went on to Israel with this song. 'Katson sineen taivaan' ended up in 14th place in a field of 19 competitors.

This single presents the English version of the song. 'I will follow starlight' was translated by Paul Fagerlund. The sleeve of this single isn't without its flaws - but for a rare single like this I am not complaining.

Tule luo - Katri Helena

Katri Helena represented Finland in the Eurovision Song Contest twice, in 1979 and 1993. 'Katson sineen taivaan' finished 14th in 1979, whereas 'Tule luo' ('Come to me') only managed 17th place. It should have been a good warning for the Netherlands, but they were stubborn and sent Willeke Alberti to the Contest only a year later.

That's not to say that 'Tule luo' was a bad song: if anything, it was melodious - a lot more melodious than many other Finnish entries around that time. But perhaps Katri Helena, who was born on March 17, 1945 had become a little too old for the young viewing audience of the Contest.

My collection: 7" single no. 1973
Found: Bea Records, October 17, 1993
Cost: 10 guilders
Tracks: 'Tule luo' / 'Viesti'
