Lido shuffle - Boz Scaggs

One of the songs that defined the year 1977 for me was What can I say by Boz Scaggs. Don't know why, I probably heard it a lot back then - courtesy of my sister. Another single from the same album was 'Lido shuffle', which was not as big a hit in the Netherlands, but it was still well-known.

This version of the single is a German promotional 7", with a white label. Shameful fact: I actually thought this was a different song, but I don't know the title of that one now. Fortunately, this track is another one I vaguely recall from the old days...

My collection: 7" single no. 5352
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, November 24, 2013
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Lido shuffle' / 'Love me tomorrow'

What can I say - Boz Scaggs

In 1976, Boz Scaggs who had been working music for over a decade, linked up with session musicians who would later form Toto and recorded his hit album 'Silk degrees'. The album reached number 2 on the US Billboard 200, and number 1 in a number of countries across the world. The album also spawned three hit singles: 'Lowdown', 'Lido shuffle' and 'What can I say'.

In the Netherlands, 'What can I say' was the biggest hit of the three, peaking at number 5 in April 1977. It was one of those songs that defined the year for me, although I was quite young at the time.

My collection: 7" single no. 2415
Found: All that music, Leiden, July 22, 1995
Cost: 1 guilder
Tracks: 'What can I say' / 'Harbor lights'

Heart of mine - Boz Scaggs

Boz Scaggs was born as William Royce Scaggs in Canton, Ohio. He recorded his debut solo album in 1965. The biggest hit of his career was 'What can I say' in 1977.

His 1986 album 'Other roads' spawned the single 'Heart of mine', his last top 40 hit in the USA, peaking at number 35. In Europe, this single did not chart. I heard this song on a cd-single my sister had bought in order to get 'What can I say' on cd. I preferred the B-side of this single - and I still do.

My collection: 7" single no. 693
Found: Rotterdam, December 1, 1988
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Heart of mine' / 'You'll never know'
