Somewhere in my heart - Aztec Camera

After I'd bought the cd-single of 'Somewhere in my heart', I bought the 7" single. I didn't do this immediately: I think it took me eight years to get to that, but I did it anyway. And six years after that, I bought the 12" single too.

'Somewhere in my heart' was the biggest hit for Aztec Camera, reaching number 3 in the UK singles chart. It was the third single from their 1987 album 'Love'.

My collection: 7" single no. 2986
Found: House of Rhythm, London, May 23, 1998
Cost: 40p
Tracks: 'Somewhere in my heart' / 'Everybody is a number one (Boston '86 version)'

Oblivious - Aztec Camera

Track 1 from Aztec Camera's debut album 'High land, hard rain' (1983) is 'Oblivious', which was also released as a single. The band consisted of Roddy Frame, Bernie Clark, Campbell Owens and Dave Ruffy.

The single was the band's first to reach the singles chart, peaking at number 47.

My collection: 7" single no. 3255
Found: House of Rhythm, London, October 20, 2000
Cost: 60p
Tracks: 'Oblivious' / 'Orchid girl'

Walk out to winter - Aztec Camera

I never know what came first: the chicken or the egg. It's the same with this song: the lyric fits the music really well - or is it the other way around? The music sounds extremely 'wintery', but it might be because of the lyric that I think that.

The single reached number 64 in the UK singles chart and remains one of the band's best recognised songs.

My collection: 7" single no. 1983
Found: Record Exchange, London, October 17, 1993
Cost: 1 pound
Tracks: 'Walk out to winter' / 'Set the killing free'

Working in a goldmine - Aztec Camera

Taken from the album 'Love', 'Working in goldmine' was an unlikely single candidate. The track lasts for 5 minutes and 40 seconds and is a tad introverted. But it is an interesting song and that was rewarded by the listeners in the UK; the single climbed to the number 31 position.

My copy of the single contains a slight error: the label for the A-side is attached on both sides of the disc. The B-side, 'I threw it all away', was recorded live at the Colston Hall, Bristol in June 1988.

My collection: 7" single no. 793
Found: Disco Market, Den Haag, April 15, 1989
Cost: 1 guilder
Tracks: 'Working in a goldmine' / 'I threw it all away (live)'

Somewhere in my heart - Aztec Camera

I first discovered the track 'Somewhere in my heart' because of the cd-single that featured Aztec Camera's old hit 'Walk out to winter'. I bought the cd-single and discovered that the lead track was very good as well. Then when I spotted the 12" single a few years later, I discovered that it contained a remix version. Clocking in at 7 minutes, this truly is an extended version, and a pretty good one too.

Aztec Camera is one of those great undiscovered British bands that deserved more recognition in the charts. The cover of Van Halen's 'Jump' in a true singer/songwriter style on this 12" single is further proof of their talent.

My collection: 12" single no. 466
Found: Record exchange, London, 2004
Cost: 1 pound
Tracks: 'Somewhere in my heart (remix)' / 'Everybody is a number one (Boston '86 version)', 'Down the dip (live)', 'Jump (live)
