Fifth of May - Ph.D.

Although 'I won't let you down' remains their only big hit, Ph.D. did release some more singles. That much is evident from this blog already, but I found another single which I didn't know about. 'Fifth of May' was taken from the band's second album 'Is it safe?' and was apparently released in Italy only (although a promotional 7" single from the USA also exists).

The band reformed in 2009 and released a third album, appropriately titled 'Three', but that one wasn't a commercial success either.

My collection: 7" single no. 5979
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, November 11, 2017
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Fifth of May' / 'Johnny'

I didn't know - Ph.D.

'I didn't know' is the first single from Ph.D.'s second album 'Is it safe?', released in 1983. The single did not chart in the UK, but reportedly it did have some success in certain European countries.

Jim Diamond and Tony Hymas have recently reformed and released their third album 'Three' earlier this year.

My collection: 7" single no. 4188
Found: Chelsea Records, Antwerpen, November 8, 2009
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'I didn't know' / 'Theme for Jenny'

There's no answer to it - Ph.D.

The self-titled debut album from Ph.D. did not only include their big hit 'I won't let you down' and the unsuccessful 'Little Suzi's on the up' but also this follow-up single, 'There's no answer to it'. This third single didn't trouble the charts anyway and sunk without a trace.

My collection: 7" single no. 3815
Found: La La Land, Den Haag, July 2, 2009
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'There's no answer to it' / 'Rock 'n' Roll days'

Little Suzi's on the up - Ph.D.

The duo Ph.D. (Jim Diamond and Tony Hymas) followed up 'I won't let you down' within a few months, hoping to have similar success. They didn't: the single did not chart anywhere. The music video for this song was shown as the fifth video on MTV in America, on its first broadcasting day on August 1, 1981.

Subsequent singles were equally unsuccessful and when singer Jim Diamond contracted hepatitis, the band couldn't go on tour. This ultimately led to the group disbanding. Diamond would come back some time later as a solo artist.

My collection: 7" single no. 2139
Found: Grammofoonwinkel, Utrecht, August 2, 1994
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Little Suzi's on the up' / 'I'm gonna take you to the top'

I won't let you down - Ph.D.

Jim Diamond, Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips formed Ph.D. in 1980. Their self-titled debut album (1981) featured the hit single 'I won't let you down', which went number 1 in the Netherlands and number 3 in the UK. Part of the success could be attributed to the rather funny video that accompanied the single.

My collection: 7" single no. 895
Found: All that music, Leiden, June 23, 1989
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'I won't let you down' / 'Hideaway'
