Vandaag - Het Goede Doel

After the chart success of 'Met open ogen', Het Goede Doel released a second single from their album 'Souvenir' entitled 'Vandaag' ('Today'). Clocking in at six minutes, it was another lengthy single from the group. (Previous hits 'België', 'Hou van mij' and 'Alles geprobeerd' were also over six minutes long).

The single went by unnoticed by the general public: it stalled outside the Dutch Top 40.

Cost: 0,66 euro

Ik dans dus ik besta - Het Goede Doel

After disappearing from the pop scene for a year, the Dutch band Het Goede Doel returned with a new single in early 1986. Entitled 'Ik dans dus ik besta' ('I dance, therefore I am') it was a bouncy pop tune. The lyric was less ironic than earlier tracks, and this resulted in a lower placing in the Dutch Top 40: it peaked at number 29.

Five singles were released from the album 'Mooi en onverslijtbaar', of which this was the one I liked the least. I recently bought it, and was pleased to find out that the 'instrumental' B-side is actually a remix of the track. It even includes vocals.

Found: Empire Records, Den Haag, December 11, 2008
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Ik dans dus ik besta' / 'Ik dans dus ik besta (instrumental)'

4 films - Het Goede Doel

Het Goede Doel (The Good Cause) released their single '4 films' in 1987. It was a new track on the live album that was released after their tour across the Netherlands after the release of their third studio album 'Mooi en onverslijtbaar' (1986). It didn't become a hit and has since become a very rare track. A version sung by Ramses Shaffy was released on the album 'Iedereen is anders' (1988), but this original version wasn't released on cd for a long time.

The B-side is a live version of the track 'Atoombom' ('Atom bomb'), also taken from the live album mentioned above.

Found: Empire Records, January 9, 2009
Cost: 0,5 euro

Met open ogen - Het Goede Doel

The Dutch band Het Goede Doel released 'Met open ogen' ('With eyes opened') in 1989. Much was made of the length of the track: it lasted for almost 15 minutes. At least, on the cd-single. The 7" vinyl version, which was made after the cd-single started selling well, only contained the 'mini-mix', which was only two and a half minutes long. This edited version didn't contain the fascinating solos and experimental segments of the full version. The track was taken from the album 'Souvenir'. Both this track and the album got criticised because they were deemed 'too pretentious'.

The song became the last hit for Het Goede Doel, reaching number 27 in the Dutch Top 40. Further singles didn't reach the chart anymore.

My collection: 7" single no. 3477
Found: Empire Records, Den Haag, December 11, 2008
Cost: 0,5 euro
Tracks: 'Met open ogen (mini-mix)' / 'Met open ogen (mini-mix - instrumental)'

Luxemburg - The Good Cause

The Dutch group Het Goede Doel decided to try and forge an international career with this single, 'Luxemburg'. It was an English translation of 'België' ('Belgium'), their biggest hit in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, in the translation a lot of the humour of the original version had been lost. If only for the cultural fact that the Dutch tend to look down on their southerly neighbours, whereas no-one really has an opinion about Luxemburg.

After an appearance in a European broadcast (with this video), the single sunk without a trace. Still, it is kindof a collectors item in the Netherlands, because it wasn't released there.

My collection: 7" single no. 3018
Found: Record fair, Amsterdam, September 5, 1998
Cost: 5 guilders
Tracks: 'Luxemburg' / 'Bread and circuses (instrumental)'

Eenvoud - Goede Doel (het)

Sometimes within a blog one has to push its boundaries. One of the boundaries I had set in the beginning was that I wasn't going to discuss music in Dutch. After all, no-one understands this language, and more often than not the quality of Dutch-language music leaves a lot to be desired. But then I thought: I only buy the good stuff, and there are more strange languages on this blog (like for instance Turkish, Italian and Spanish). So here goes...

The group Het Goede Doel ('The good cause') hails from Utrecht, one of the four biggest cities of the Netherlands. Their seventh single was 'Eenvoud' ('Simplicity'), containing the recurring like 'Alles draait om de eenvoud' ('Everything revolves around simplicity'). With its powerful music it is one of the more energetic songs of 1983. It reached number 11 in the Dutch Top 40.
