Bright new morning - The Adventures

The beautiful folk-inspired track 'Bright new morning' was lifted from the Adventures' third album 'Trading secrets with the moon' and released as its second single. If there was any justice in the world, this single would have become a massive hit, but like the album it sunk without a trace.

Somehow the band failed to build on the success they'd had with the album 'The sea of love' two years earlier, in 1988.

My collection: 7" single no. 5190
Found: Fun Records, Berlin, received July 9, 2011
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Bright new morning' / 'Loves lost town'

Your greatest shade of blue - The Adventures

The Adventures combined pop/rock with a folk music sound for their third album, 'Trading secrets with the moon'. Released in early 1990, the album failed to capitalise on their earlier success and only appeared briefly on the UK albums chart, stalling at number 64.

The first single from the album was 'Washington Deceased', which failed to chart. This second single, 'Your greatest shade of blue', met the same fate. Strange, because it's quite a beautiful pop song.

My collection: 7" single no. 5126
Found: Backtrack, Antwerpen, June 9, 2011
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Your greatest shade of blue' / 'Put me together again'

Two rivers - The Adventures

The Adventures debuted in 1984 with the album 'Theodore and friends' which has recently been released on cd by Cherry Red records (Buy it here). The fourth and final single taken from that album was released after the relative success of 'Send my heart' and 'Feel the raindrops'.

Unfortunately, this single stalled at number 96 and this meant that the album didn't get the much needed promotional push. Fortunately, the band's second album, released in 1988, would do much better.

My collection: 7" single no. 5090
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, April 9, 2011
Cost: 1 euro
Tracks: 'Two rivers' / 'Love in chains (live)'

Drowning in the sea of love - The Adventures

The Adventures released their most successful album 'The sea of love' in 1988. It reached number 30 in the UK albums chart and remained in that chart for 10 week. It was certified silver (for 60,000 copies sold) a year after its release.

Meanwhile, the second single from the album was 'Drowning in the sea of love'. It reached number 44 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 2420

Broken land - The Adventures

Between 1986 and 1988, things went quiet around the Adventures. During this time, main songwriter Pat Gribben composed some songs, the band left Chrysalis Records and signed to Elektra Records.

'Broken land', released in early 1988, was promoted heavily by their new record company. The sound of the band was warmer, and included some traditional instruments such as uillean pipes. The single became the band's first significant hit, peaking at number 20 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 722
Found: Disco Market, Den Haag, January 21, 1989
Cost: 1 guilder
Tracks: 'Broken land' / 'Don't stand on me'

Free 4 track solid EP - Various

'The RM EP is to pop music what lion were to the Romans. A veritable signal post in the history of popular music, it is graced by the noble presence of New Order - already well establish in the halls of the gods. Hipsway, up and vying for a throne therin, the Adventures - another young and strong contender - and, last but not least, Raymonde, tipped by many as one of the most exciting newcomers this year. This is the RM EP - play it morning, noon and night'.

Well, there you have it. The UK magazine Record Mirror gave out this 7" single with their magazine sometime in 1986 and a decade later a record shop was trying to sell it. According to the price sticker, they weren't very successful. The price started at 1 pound and fell to 20p by the time I bought it.

My collection: 7" single no. 2501
Found: House of Rhythm, London, October 30, 1995
Cost: 20p
Tracks: 'Sub-culture (exclusive remix)' (New Order), 'Jennifer wants' (Raymonde) / 'Bad thing longing' (Hipsway), 'Walk away Renee' (The Adventures)

Send my heart - Adventures

When the Adventures released their second single 'Send my heart', it was promoted with a limited edition double single, featuring the first single 'Another silent day' as disc two. For the longest time I searched for this double single; my sister bought it when it came out, but I couldn't find it and had to wait until 1990 to find my copy.

'Another silent day' had reached number 71 in the UK singles chart, and 'Send my heart' reached number 62. But for the first time, the band also scored a (minor) hit in other territories as well: the single reached number 24 in Germany and number 44 in Italy.

My collection: 7" single no. 1318
Found: London, October 16, 1990
Cost: 3 pounds
Tracks: 'Send my heart' / 'These children (live)' // 'Another silent day' / 'Happy depression'

Another silent day - The Adventures

There's something really alluring to early Eighties remixes: they are always based on the original recording, they are just longer. Echo effects, instrumental passages, and sometimes extra choruses are used to give the listener that extended listening experience.

The Adventures released 'Another silent day' in 1984, which was the time when these extended versions were still made. I've been searching for this 12" single for a long time, so I was really glad to have finally found it.

My collection: 12" single no. 508
Found: Songs for sale, Rotterdam, July 31, 2009
Cost: 1,5 euro
Tracks: 'Another silent day (extended)' / 'Another silent day', 'Happy depression'

Feel the raindrops - The Adventures

Almost a decade before I bought the 12" single of 'Feel the raindrops', I bought the 7" single. It was one of the best tracks of 1985 in my opinion, and after the beautiful 'Send my heart', this was another track I instantly fell in love with.

The song still sounds as fresh as ever now in 2009. Music like this has become pretty rare in the mean time.

My collection: 7" single no. 440
Found: Disco Market, Den Haag, July 26, 1986
Cost: 2 guilders
Tracks: 'Feel the raindrops' / 'Nowhere near me'

Another silent day - The Adventures

Lead vocalist Terry Sharpe and guitarist Pat Gribben first worked together when in 1978 they joined the punk band Starjets. This band disbanded in the early 1980s. Sharpe and Gribben then formed The Adventures in early 1984 with Gribben's wife, Eileen, Gerard Murphy, Tony Ayre and Paul Crowder. They signed to Chrysalis Records and were taken on by upcoming manager, Simon Fuller, who saw them achieve much publicity and promotion in the music press.

Their debut single 'Another silent day' was released in the summer of 1984. It was released as a limited edition double single featuring two bonus tracks. It peaked at number 71 in the UK singles chart.

My collection: 7" single no. 2358
Found: Eastbourne, June 28, 1995
Cost: 5 pounds
Tracks: 'Another silent day' / 'Happy depression' // 'Nowhere near me (demo)' / 'Token'

One step from heaven - The Adventures

During my 1989 shopping spree in London, I bought several singles 'by association'. I'd heard from the artist and assumed that the single I didn't know would be as good as the ones I did know. 'One step from heaven' by the Adventures is one of the best examples. I liked 'Broken land' and 'Drowning in the sea of love', both singles from the album 'The sea of love', but I absolutely loved this single when I finally heard it after the holiday. It's got everything: a good melody, strong drums, powerful vocals. It's a mystery to me why it didn't become a hit anywhere.

My collection: 7" single no. 1039
Found: Record Exchange, London, October 17, 1989
Cost: 50p
Tracks: 'One step from heaven (remix)' / 'The trip to bountiful (When the rain comes down)'

Feel the raindrops - The Adventures

The Adventures released their debut album 'Theodore and Friends' in 1985. It featured the track 'Send my heart', as well as the earlier single 'Another silent day' and this one, 'Feel the raindrops'. All three singles were minor hits in the UK, but despite a world tour supporting Tears for fears, they didn't manage more success than that.

This 12" single is a relatively new find. I didn't pay much attention to 12" singles in 1985, apart from those released by my very favourite artists. Fortunately, a decade on, these vinyl discs kept popping up from time to time. Up for grabs!

My collection: 12" single no. 275
Found: Record fair, Netherlands, 1995
Cost: 6 guilders
Tracks: 'Feel the raindrops (extended version)' / 'Nowhere near me', 'Tristesse en vitesse'

Send my heart - Adventures

The Adventures were a rock band from Belfast (Ireland). They moved to London to sign with Chrysalis records and release their first records in 1984. Their second single was 'Send my heart'. It reached the lower regions of the UK charts.

I got to know the band via a local radio station which kept playing even the smallest hits from England. The fact that they consistently released double single editions made them very interesting for me. It took a long time for me to notice their 12" singles: only recently did I start buying them, discovering all the extended remixes included on them.

My collection: 12" single no. 437
Found: Record fair, Utrecht, 2004
Cost: 3 euro
Tracks: 'Send my heart (extended re-mix)', 'Send my heart (Band remix)' / 'These children (live)', 'Life during wartime (live)'
